Marc Stamco Interview

IRIE. Tell us about your background and how you got started in music.

MARC STAMCO. I grew up in Toronto in a house with five languages. I’m lucky I can speak well at all. However, each part of the family had different music, food, holiday traditions, and even different sports. My auntie gave me an old guitar from her basement when I was 11 or 12. My parents always supported my choices, especially in music. At 15 years old, I arranged to play music with my brother and two friends at the opening of a local New Park, and people danced. I was hooked.

IRIE. What inspired you to start writing music?

MARC STAMCO. It just happened naturally. I was never any prodigious player but melodies always came easily.

IRIE. Do you remember the first song you ever wrote and performed?

MARC STAMCO. It was called Blind Wind, very Pink Floyd inspired. One day, I’ll record a version of it.

IRIE. I remember my first song, too, and I am dying to record a version! Let’s talk about inspiration. Who were some of your musical influences that helped shape your music?

MARC STAMCO. David Bowie, Carlos Santana… I know two different artists completely, but I have about eight Santana ticket stubs, and the same goes for Bowie. Jeff Beck also, William Allwyn, and Papa Hayden. Plus, I always loved the Tubes. LoL.

IRIE. How would you describe your sound?

MARC STAMCO. I like to write in different genres, although I try to maintain a signature guitar sound. I hope it is recognizable and accessible to other composers also.

IRIE. What is your approach when writing a new song? Do you have a method, or does each song evolve differently?

MARC STAMCO. When writing in my own catalog, I always begin with guitar … after that, I follow my instinct, and my only influencers at that point would be poetry or lyrics.

IRIE. Your latest release is the single, ‘Elevator Dreams’. What is the meaning behind the song?

MARC STAMCO. I had a friend who told me she was stuck in an Elevator for hours with no music or communication. She slept, and related dreams to me that had put her in two places simultaneously, and I was immediately motivated.

IRIE. Wow, that is definitely motivating and inspiring! Is there a track from your discography that resonates most with you? If so, why?

MARC STAMCO. Monsieur Blu is the one that comes to mind. Although instrumental, it is emotional, with melancholy and hope.

IRIE. If you could change one thing about the music industry to truly support independent artists, what would that be?

MARC STAMCO. I am a dinosaur, I guess, and I am worried about artificial intelligence.

IRIE. Me too, brother! What’s in store for Marc Stamco in 2025?

MARC STAMCO. A new album is in the wind for 2025!

IRIE. What do you hope your fans or first-time listeners take with them after hearing your music?

MARC STAMCO. I hope to inspire warm sound and melody as a path to appreciation of one another and our home, Earth!

IRIE. Is there anything you would like to say or share with the IRIE Magazine audience?

MARC STAMCO. I want to thank each and every listener and my collaborators in all this beautiful madness.

IRIE. Maaaad Love and Respect, Brother!
